Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)
Many data sets in the United States aggregate data using common geographic identification codes developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Information Technology. Virtually all demographic and economic information is reported using the codes developed by the NISTIT.
US County FIPS Code Common Name Value Lables.SPS
Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 6–4 provides the names and codes that represent the counties and other entities treated as equivalent legal and/or statistical subdivisions of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and the possessions and freely associated areas of the United States. Counties are considered to be the "first-order subdivisions" of each State and statistically equivalent entity, regardless of their local designations (county, parish, borough, etc.).
US County FIPS Code to Common Name Recode.SPS
This syntax adds the common name of counties to a data file using the five digit State/County FIPS Codes to make table building and general data management easier for those that don't have the FIPS codes memorized. (With thanks to Chris Boyd)
